Why Our Industry-Leading Enhanced Video Texting Won 2 Reed Awards

Read why the most innovative technology in texting is now our Enhanced Video Texting, and why you should be using this product in 2022 and beyond.

Enhanced Video Texting has officially won every major award in the political industry with the claim of our two new Reed Awards this past week. Our team representing RumbleUp in Nashville at the annual event was proud to walk up on the stage and accept our awards for “Most Innovative Product of the Year” and “Best Use of Mobile Technology.”

So why was EVT able to capture the attention of leading experts in the political industry for the second year in a row? Here is the backstory:

The Inspiration for Enhanced Video Texting

If a picture is worth a thousand words, a video is an entire story. Video has the power to convey subtleties and evoke emotion in an undisputedly more effective way than image or plain text alone. Given this power, most Americans prefer to consume information in video format, making TV and digital ads a staple in campaigning.

Yet TV advertisements remain a luxury for smaller campaigns, and often not worth the investment given the rate of cord cutters increasing to almost a third of U.S. households. Digital ads did not fare much better in 2021, as campaigns once again found themselves with limited access to search & social media advertisement due to content freezes following the 2020 election.

RumbleUp Enhanced Video Texting - Trouble Brewing in 2021

What reliable alternative was available for campaigns? The answer: our “Enhanced Video Texting,” or EVT.

Why Enhanced Video Texting Changed the Way Campaigns Approached their Outreach

In response to the changing landscape, we pioneered an innovative way to convert made-for-TV campaign ads into text message optimized videos, bridging the TV-Texting divide. The capability to send high quality, 30+ second videos embedded directly in a text did not exist in the industry prior to our solution, and competition that has since arisen fails to match our quality.

RumbleUp Enhanced Video Texting - See the Enhanced Video Texting Difference Yourself

EVT allowed campaigns of any size and budget to distribute their video content at a reasonable price point via text – the channel with a 95%+ open rate – and bypass TV and unreliable digital mediums altogether. This is especially crucial in an off-year when funds can be tight, and the ability to send content directly to an audience owned by the campaign and receive direct feedback is an invaluable method for obtaining zero-party data.

Why Enhanced Video Texting Deserved Two Reed Awards

As the texting medium continues to become more prolific due to increased understanding of its benefits, cellular carriers have cracked down on suspicious message content to minimize spam. EVT, like regular Multimedia Messaging Service traffic, brought legitimacy to each text sent by our clients, ensuring their messages and videos were delivered without issue to voters.

In 2021, we further refined our compression technology to handle more audio & visual variables. This increased the maximum video length from 60 seconds to 90 seconds, allowing campaigns to send a greater variety of videos. Videos from made-for-TV quality down to direct-to-camera filmed on a smartphone were sent with our EVT technology.

The accessibility of our EVT technology also increased in 2021 with the addition of automated video conversion to our platform, eliminating the bottleneck of manually processing video compressions. This in-portal feature includes the ability to customize video captions and to translate them into a different language, increasing a campaign’s reach and accommodating voters with hearing impairments.

RumbleUp Enhanced Video Texting - Continued Refinements for EVT in 2021

Why you should be using Enhanced Video Texting in 2022 and beyond

No free video compression tool or competitor can compare to the visual or audio quality of 30+ second videos compressed with our Enhanced Video Texting technology, and adding video texting to your outreach will help you stand out from the crowd.

Campaigns in 2020 and 2021 used Enhanced Video Texting for a wide variety of initiatives, including fundraising, advocacy, persuasion, and as an alternative to expensive TV ads. In addition, many campaigns with limited budgets were also able to utilize the flexibility of our technology to send simple, direct-to-camera EVT’s instead of expensive professional videos, saving them even more time and money.

The campaigns who have utilized EVT and experienced its benefits say that it is now their preferred method of outreach in 2022, especially because voters respond well to receiving these high quality embedded video messages.

Bottom Line

We are proud to have revolutionized the texting medium with the development of high quality video text messages, which are accessible to campaigns, regardless of their size. In total, over 4 million voters received an EVT through our platform in 2021, allowing campaigns to connect with voters like never before.

The fast adoption of EVT is setting the stage for 2022 to become the year of the video text, and we are excited to see what the future holds with this industry leading technology.

How Checkmate Strategies Flipped NJ LD-8 in 2021 with a Phenomenal Layered P2P Texting Plan

Learn how Checkmate Strategies was able to continue their record of flipping New Jersey districts red in one of the most competitive and expensive legislative races in the state’s history by using peer-to-peer (P2P) texting.

New Jersey, like Virginia, was filled with some of the hottest races in the country in 2021, and for good reason. Victories and flips for Republican candidates were occurring all over the state, but one battleground district in particular, LD-8, saw the most dramatic flip against all odds.

In fact, LD-8 was so competitive in 2021 that it “rank[ed] among the top ten most expensive legislative races in New Jersey history” according to New Jersey Election Law Enforcement Commission (ELEC) Executive Director Jeff Brindle

So what was happening behind the scenes? How was the Stanfield Team in LD-8 able to flip the seat despite all the challenges stacked against them? The answer is simple – it was due to the expert messaging strategy using peer-to-peer (P2P) texting by the political consulting firm Checkmate Strategies.

About Checkmate Strategies

Checkmate Strategies started texting with us in 2018, and they have worked with many high profile candidates in New Jersey and across the country since then.

One of these candidates is Republican Mike Testa, who beat the former Democratic incumbent in the NJ Senate representing LD-1 in 2019, which helped flip LD-1 red. The victories continued in LD-2 in 2021, where Checkmate Strategies flipped two Assembly seats red and held the Senate seat with Vince Polistina.

They were also the lead strategist for the Jack Ciattarelli for Governor campaign, which nearly defeated the incumbent Governor in a state where Republicans are outnumbered by over 1 million Democrats.

The Challenges and Opportunities in LD-8

The climate for Republican candidates in New Jersey is not friendly for many reasons. Traditionally as soon as voting starts, there are immediately 1 million more registered Democrats than Republican voters – this means that Republicans are at an immediate disadvantage across the board for support, name ID, fundraising, and more.

For context on the climate in NJ LD-8 in 2021, Biden was +3 and Democrats were +5. In order to be competitive, Republicans in NJ have to be aggressive, fresh and thought provoking to get people fired up, and they have to do it with uncomfortably low funds.

Despite all this, remarkable opportunities arose from one incumbent state senator who flipped party affiliation from Republican to Democrat mid-term and two state assembly members who left their seats open for the taking.

The makeup of the ticket, especially in these three vacated seats, was a little different than what one would normally expect from traditional strong Republican candidates:

  • Jean Stanfield, who ran for the State Senate seat, was the first female sheriff in Burlington County, NJ and a proud grandmother. Jean was a two term member of the State Assembly in LD-8 as well.
  • Michael Torrissi Jr., a small business owner in his 40’s who ran for one of the State Assembly seats, started out working on his family peach farm.
  • Brandon Umba, who ran for the other State Assembly seat, was in his 30’s and had made a career for himself in various communities as a municipal administrator.

The Strategy

With fewer resources and less funds than their Democratic counterparts, along with being outspent 15-to-1 via TV and 4-to-1 via direct mail, Checkmate Strategies had to come up with a strategy that blew the competition out of the water.

The strategy they used was simple, yet sophisticated – implement aggressive outreach using multiple touchpoints and thought provoking content, show off the fresh feel of these candidates, and work smarter not harder. They chose to implement this strategy with an affordable, layered P2P texting program to send a variety of text messages to voters.

RumbleUp and Checkmate Strategies Text Message
A real conversation with a voter

A common misconception many have about incorporating P2P texting into their outreach is that they will be adding another time consuming channel that they need to curate content for from scratch. However, Checkmate Strategies was able to quickly repurpose their existing written copy and visual creative from other mediums into MMS messages to complement their existing content and hit new verticals with ease.

One area Checkmate Strategies really shined in was their targeting. Instead of using large & broad lists that may or may not reach the right voters, they sent hyperlocal texts to individual towns which really resonated with voters. They also sent texts about topics that voters in these towns cared about, such as immigration and crime.

RumbleUp and Checkmate Strategies Text Message
A real conversation with a voter

Bottom Line

The results speak for themselves. On paper, these Republican candidates should not have been able to win, but they defied expectations and flipped LD-8 red.

  • Jean Stanfield won against the incumbent by only 2.2% of the vote
  • Michael Torrissi Jr. won by only 2.4% of the vote
  • Brandon Umba won by a staggering 1.4% of the vote

Chasing every vote and truly connecting with voters on the most visible communication channel – P2P texting – was what made the difference in NJ LD-8. Want to achieve the same results with powerful and easy to use P2P texting? Sign up today at rumbleup.com.

How to Connect Your RumbleUp Opt-ins to Switchboard for Powerful Outreach

Use the reach of RumbleUp P2P texting to gather opt-ins from your active supporters, then personally connect with them in a more efficient and affordable way with Switchboard!

Peer-to-peer (P2P) texting is a powerful method of outreach with extremely high visibility. RumbleUp allows you to personally engage with voters using powerful, award-winning features, which is extremely beneficial for voter ID and growing your base of voters. Additionally, because 95%+ of texts sent are opened, texting has one of the highest response and CTA completion rates of any communication channel.

So how can P2P texting be even more effective? By adding an Opt-in texting funnel to your texting strategy. There are three powerful reasons why you should consider Opt-in texting:

  1. Opt-in texting saves you time – Unlike P2P texting where texts need to be sent individually, Opt-in texting allows you to send all your texts with just one click.
  2. Opt-in texting saves you money – Opt-in texting has a lower cost per message sent than P2P texting.
  3. Opt-in texting will help you identify your most active, loyal supporters and enable you to personally connect with them in a more efficient and affordable way.

However, the biggest challenge many people face when trying to get started with Opt-in texting is gathering Opt-ins. That is where P2P texting comes in.

Our integration with Switchboard Opt-in texting allows you to use the reach of RumbleUp P2P texting to ask voters to Opt-in, which allows you to send them money-and-time-saving texts from your Switchboard account.

So how does it work? Well we are not going to lie, it is a little technical. However, the account connection process can be completed in 30 minutes or less.

To help you get started, we have outlined the two steps you need to follow in both your Switchboard and RumbleUp accounts to get them connected, and how to send your first legally compliant Opt-in message!

On the Switchboard side

1) Create a Switchboard account

If you have already created a RumbleUp account, this process should be very familiar. Go to the Switchboard website and you will see a button to sign up in the top right corner.

2) Create a Switchboard API Key and designate a group for your Opt-ins to transfer into

You can generate your API key in your Switchboard portal. Just go to the Tools tab and click “Integrations” in the dropdown. There you will be prompted to add an API Key.

Create a Switchboard API Key and designate a group for your Opt-ins to transfer into

After this is done, it is time to make a contact group for your Opt-ins. Create a new group in the Contact Groups page found in the Contacts tab. Give your new Group a name, then set your filters to Belongs to Group > is empty. Leave the last field empty, press the minus button, then click Create.

Create a new group for your opt-ins in the Contact Groups page found in the Contacts tab

On the RumbleUp side

1) Specify your Organization Type in your RumbleUp account

Go to the Tools tab and click “Account Info” in the dropdown. There you will need to select an Organization Type. This will determine the correct Opt-in language to use when you send your first Opt-in text.

The Switchboard integration setup (seen in the next step) will remain locked until this step is completed.

Specify your Organization Type in your RumbleUp account

2) Add your Switchboard API Key and Group ID to your RumbleUp account

Copy and paste your API Key and Group ID Number into the Switchboard Integration section of your RumbleUp account to connect both of your accounts together. There are helpful instructions on the Switchboard Integration page (seen below) if you are having trouble locating them.

Add your Switchboard API Key and Group ID to your RumbleUp account

Now you are ready to send your legally compliant Opt-in request message on your RumbleUp account

The legal language required to include your first Opt-in text will vary depending on your Organization Type specified earlier.

You can find the legal language in the Suggestions section under Tap-then-Send Responses during Project setup. You may add an introduction/closing and tweak your organization name but should not modify any of the other text.

Now you are ready to send your legally compliant Opt-in request message on your RumbleUp account

Contacts who reply with SUBSCRIBE will automatically be added to your Switchboard Opt-in group!

How RumbleUp is Expertly Navigating The Campaign Registry (TCR) and the 10DLC Rollout

Worried about The Campaign Registry (TCR) and what it means for your texting programs? If you text with RumbleUp, you don’t have to worry.

Many industry outlets and texting platforms have tried to keep up with the developments related to The Campaign Registry (TCR) and understand what it means for their organization. However, the rollout of 10DLC has happened in so many stages that it can be difficult to distinguish what content is relevant and accurate.

For those who are not familiar with TCR, fear not. In this article we will cover all of the facts regarding what it is and what it means for you.

What is The Campaign Registry (TCR)?

To understand what The Campaign Registry (TCR) is, you should first understand what 10 Digit Long Code (10DLC) is.

According to The Campaign Registry’s FAQ page, 10DLC refers to a new standard, reliable messaging channel in the United States that allows businesses and other organizations to send Application-to-Person (A2P) messages sanctioned by the mobile operators with a standard 10-digit long code phone number.

The Campaign Registry (TCR) is the hub that oversees registration of 10DLC messaging campaigns.

You might be thinking to yourself, “Wait a minute, 10DLC must not apply to me… because isn’t Peer-to-Peer (P2P) texting different from A2P texting?” However, from the phone carriers’ perspective, all messages sent from a service or platform are included as A2P, regardless of whether the messages were sent out by a human being one at a time or all at once with the tap of a button.

What is The Campaign Registry (TCR)?

What does all this mean for RumbleUp clients?

If you have been keeping up with updates about The Campaign Registry (TCR) and 10DLC, you might have seen that other texting platforms have been urging their users to register with TCR since before October of 2021 to lower their rate of undelivered or flagged messages.

In the same time period, we have been working closely with the major phone carriers to finalize the political use case for vendors of our size and industry reputation, which has allowed our clients to continue to text with us and enjoy optimal unchanged delivery rates all this time.

Now in 2022, we have continued working closely with the major phone carriers as an industry advocate to make 10DLC campaign registration and verification as smooth as possible for our clients.

We have dramatically improved the registration terms for our clients since we began discussions with the phone carriers and The Campaign Registry (TCR), and we will continue to advocate for the best terms possible for political messaging. These changes will pave the way for continued political texting, which is fantastic news for our industry and clients.

As a reminder, here is a quick review of the benefits of registering:

  • Ability to use local area codes for SMS
  • Ability to use a single phone number for all MMS traffic
  • Avoids phone carrier fees for unregistered traffic
  • Highly reduces the chances of spam events
  • Faster escalation and appeal in cases of mistaken spam flagging
  • Be treated as a good actor in the political messaging ecosystem

Why is this the case?

We have a history of being an excellent actor in the telecommunications space, which is great news. Phone carriers created The Campaign Registry (TCR) to enforce a system of transparency and accountability that sorts out good actors who send good messages (like us) from bad actors who send bad messages.

Our track record of going above and beyond to make sure clients are texting with best practices has put us in a unique position to collaborate in the process of TCR development and implementation.

We continue working proactively with the many parties involved to promote transparency and ensure good traffic gets through while supporting the phone carriers in their ongoing efforts to crack down on bad traffic being sent by bad actors.

Next Steps for The Campaign Registry (TCR) Registration

Next Steps

The Campaign Registry (TCR) Registration is now live in the RumbleUp portal!

If you are a current client, please read our full registration document by logging into the portal. This document fully explains eligibility and the 10DLC registration process, including the steps for obtaining a Campaign Verify token, the anticipated timeline for receiving your token and the TCR fee structure.

Here is a summary for those who are not current clients:

Clients who are eligible for registration include:

  • If you are a Campaign, Committee, PAC, or 527
  • If you are a 501c3/c4/c5/c6
  • If you are a consultant/agency/lobbyist, you need to register your clients’ texts under one of the above categories.

Obtaining your token is the first step in the 10DLC registration process, but there will be an additional process to ensure that your token is associated with your messaging traffic in our software. Eligible entities may now apply for their Campaign Verify token here.

If you are actively texting for an eligible client, you will need to register by April 4th. If you are not actively texting for an eligible client, you may wait to start the vetting & registration process until 1 week prior to sending texts for this eligible client.

Right now, vetting & registration takes less than 48 hours, if your application is correct & eligible for email approval.

Bottom line for The Campaign Registry (TCR) and 10DLC

How to Send Compelling Direct-to-Camera Videos with Powerful EVT Technology

Want to send video content to voters, but don’t know where to start? Try sending simple, direct-to-camera videos using RumbleUp’s award-winning Enhanced Video Texting (EVT) technology.

High quality campaign videos and ads are no longer only available to large campaigns with equally large budgets. Filming simple, direct-to-camera videos from candidates is easy and effective – all you need is a cell phone!

There are many options for distributing your video content, but no option is as reliable or as  powerful as our Enhanced Video Texting (EVT) technology.

If you are not familiar with EVT, here are the basics you need to know:

  1. Our award winning EVT allows you to send clear 30+ second videos to all phone types and phone carriers.
  2. Videos are embedded directly in the text message, not linked.
  3. Custom Captions are an optional addition to make videos accessible to phones in silent mode.
  4. Sending videos directly to audiences you own ensures that your content will get in front of the right people, unlike live TV or unreliable digital platforms that block political content.

Interested in making direct-to-camera campaign videos optimized for EVT? We have compiled a simple list of guidelines for making great quality videos, along with analysis from real videos sent from our clients, to inspire you.

Guidelines for Great Texting Optimized Direct-to-Camera Videos

  1. Choose a quiet space with ample lighting (try to avoid backlighting).
  2. Avoid movement/scene changes. For example, sitting at the table in front of your phone is better than recording yourself walking through your neighborhood.
  3. Do a test run. This allows you to practice what you’re going to say and ensure there are no unanticipated background noises.
  4. Videos recorded in a square or horizontal aspect ratio are better than those recorded vertically.

Now, let’s check out some great examples of direct-to-camera videos sent by real clients.

Example 1) Nick Clemente for VA Delegate

WRS, an award-winning, full-service creative strategy and voter engagement firm, coordinated the texting for the Nick Clemente for Delegate campaign. They sent three amazing direct-to-camera EVT videos featuring Clemente about his commitment to standing with victims of sexual assault to each county in his district and one direct-to-camera EVT Monday before Election Day in 2021 shown above.

These videos were sent to over 15,000 voters with a 95% delivery rate on average across the four projects.

Example 2) Gary Rabine for IL Governor

Gary Rabine is running for Governor of Illinois and started out his texting outreach with a bang. He sent the longest EVT on record with his 97 second direct-to-camera video. The video served as a great introduction for Rabine, explained his stance against Biden’s vaccine mandate, and allowed for voters to respond back with what they want to see from Rabine in office.

This video was sent to over 35,000 voters, receiving 3,233 replies.

Example 3) Mike Testa for NJ State Senate

Our resident texting superstar Mike Testa sent this compelling direct-to-camera EVT explaining his stance against vaccine passports as a violation to the constitution and medical privacy. Testa also attached a fundraising CTA to his message, allowing voters to take action if they agreed with him to help him continue spreading the word.

This video was sent to over 4,000 voters with a 99% delivery rate and received 116 replies.

Bottom Line

No matter the size of your campaign, it is important to connect with voters in ways that truly resonate with them. While it is important for voters to have multiple touchpoints in various formats with your campaign, video content is the most effective in accurately conveying your message and drawing a genuine emotional connection.

If you are ready to start using peer-to-peer texting to send your video content directly to your audience, take the first step today and sign up with RumbleUp at rumbleup.com. Have more questions about RumbleUp or EVT? Contact our sales team at (833) 530-4400 or sales@rumbleup.com to discuss how texting can best work for you.

’21 Client Success Stories – P2P Fundraising Pro Mike Testa

Learn from a campaign who has been successfully raising money through texting for years. These tips and message examples will inspire voters to donate all cycle long.

It’s official – fundraising for the 2022 election cycle is underway. Now is the time to begin building a reliable base of donors to support you through the primary season and make it to November. Even if you are a texting veteran, keeping up to date on the latest best practices will keep your fundraising programs ahead of the curve and engage voters all cycle long.

If you have not tried fundraising with P2P texting yet or are looking for ways to improve, we have you covered. Take it from the text-to-fundraise pro Lauren Casper herself:

“Our fundraising programs really took off with RumbleUp because of how effectively we were able to prospect new donors with quick questions, tag their responses and segment people into groups for follow up. This ties perfectly into our digital lead gen and the ability to instantly respond to each person who texts back was a game changer.”

– Lauren Casper, Finance Director at Mike Testa for Senate

Here are three examples of real fundraising messages from the Mike Testa campaign and best practices you need for successful fundraising in 2022:

1) Q1 Fundraising

Testa’s team is second to none when it comes to engaging messages. The texts they send are always compelling and conversational, similar to how you would text a friend or family member. This message style encourages participation and resonates well with supporters. A mistake many of those who are new to P2P texting make is writing messages in the same formal tone as an email or mail piece, which do not resonate well in a text.

Mike Testa Q1 Fundraising with RumbleUp
A real conversation with a voter

This message example also included an MMS attachment which has been shown to increase engagement and response rates by 50%. There are several reasons why this works well:

  • You can include more information in an image than what a standard 320 character message can fit
  • You can provide vital context and imagery to the message that strengthens its ability to resonate with voters
  • You can include your official logo and build visual recognition
  • You can often bypass spam issues that frequently arise with regular SMS messages

Their image hit all of these points. The clever use of the shape of New Jersey as a meter for his campaign’s fundraising goal provided his audience with a clear picture of how their donation will make a difference. Including Testa’s photo in the attachment also helped facilitate more face recognition, which is important even as the incumbent in his district.

Testa’s team also understands a vital but often underused tactic to turn supporters into super-supporters. This tactic is so easy you probably use it everyday – treating the texting channel as a conversational tool. In other words, the team makes a point of responding to people who take the time to reply to their messages.

The voter in this example responded directly to the question posed in the text, and after receiving a response from the team, they successfully donated. This person is now much more likely to continue donating in the future because the campaign’s engagement demonstrated that their time and effort are seen and appreciated!

2) Fundraising Event Invitation

This message example is written just as well as the previous example but faced more challenges.

Mike Testa Fundraising Event Invitation with RumbleUp
A real conversation with a voter

The MMS attachment they included contained all the information about a breakfast event without requiring people to click an external link, which many are unwilling to do. While some people cannot afford the ticket price or to take time off of work, the campaign made sure to include all their supporters.

Even though this supporter could not make it to the event, they sent back some positive words of support for Testa. The response from the team acknowledging the supporter and encouraging them to come to the next event was greatly appreciated.

This extra care to respond to supporters, even if they could not complete the CTA intended with the message, increases the likelihood that they will continue supporting Testa and donate to his campaign in the future.

3) Election Week Fundraising

This fundraising text was sent one week before the 2021 election and asked for specific small-dollar contributions. The clever connection of the amount of time before election day to the suggested contribution amount is a great way to get people’s attention.

Mike Testa Election Week Fundraising with RumbleUp
A real conversation with a voter

One technical strategy in this message (as well as the previous messages) is that the included links are shortened with our custom URL shortener. This is important because free link shorteners, such as bit.ly, often get messages caught in carrier spam filters. Our list of custom link shorteners is constantly rotated to prevent this from happening, and using shortened links instead of full links gives you more characters to use when writing messages.

Testa’s team also utilized many behind-the-scenes strategies enabled by our platform’s unique tools and features to help them save time during the busy week leading up to election day.

They took full advantage of our Tap-then-Send responses with corresponding tags because they anticipated common responses they would need to send, such as “Thank you!”. This allowed their team to send responses in just two clicks, and tag voters’ contact cards as they shared information about themselves in replies.

The team can now filter by these tags for easy segmenting and responding, which they have utilized for years to make hyper-targeted lists for all kinds of use cases, including fundraising!

Summary of Best Practices for P2P Fundraising Messages

  1. Write conversational messages to avoid formal language resembling an email. Conversational messages resonate better with people.
    1. Including clear opt-out language is a key factor in improving the delivery rate of your message, and makes recipients feel that they are in control if they do not wish to be contacted.
    2. Avoid excessive all-caps and exclamatory punctuation to avoid striking the wrong tone.
  2. Use MMS attachments!
  3. Shorten links to your fundraising page using our Custom URL Shortener to ensure your message does not go to spam.
  4. Respond to replies from people, made easy with our Tap-then-Send Response tool, to turn supporters into super supporters.
  5. Tag voters for easy segmentation and identification.
  6. Devise a clever connection in the message to the suggested contribution amount to contribute to get people’s attention.

Bottom Line

With these examples and best practices in hand, you can be sure that your P2P fundraising messages will have the best chance possible for succeeding. Be sure to check out our other fundraising articles for even more inspiration.

Why Enhanced Video Texting Easily won a 2021 CampaignTech Award

Read how the hottest trend in texting became video and why you should be using this product in 2022.

Our Enhanced Video Texting (EVT) was the most acclaimed texting product in 2021 for good reason.

On August 26th, 2021, Campaigns & Elections announced that we won the “Innovation in Texting” CampaignTech award for our Enhanced Video Texting Technology. Earlier last year, EVT won two Gold Pollie Awards for “Best Use of Peer-to-Peer Texting” and “Best Ad Technology Innovation.”

Here is how our award-winning technology captured the attention of leading experts in the political industry.

Changes in the landscape created opportunities for EVT to shine

Changes in the landscape created opportunities for EVT to shine

During the 2020 cycle, Enhanced Video Texting was used by high-profile candidates to stand out from the competition by allowing them to send high-quality, made-for-TV campaign videos directly to voters’ phones.

Clients using EVT noticed their advantage was especially apparent in the weeks leading up to the election. It became a reliable alternative to promote videos and connect one-on-one with voters after the political advertising freeze on big tech platforms.

The alarming number of cord-cutters in the US further added to the adoption of texting as a direct way to reach people with video content that had traditionally been reserved for TV. Studies found that in 2020, 1-in-5 households no longer had traditional TV services as ad-free streaming services continue to explode. This meant fewer people were seeing ads that campaigns paid good money to serve during traditional TV commercial slots, significantly reducing their effectiveness.

The diminishing returns on these channels have not improved since then. The percentage of cord-cutters reached nearly 1-3 households in 2021, and more uncertainty revealed itself on big tech platforms with developments such as the Facebook vs Apple privacy war and Facebook’s worldwide server outage.

Why you should be using EVT in 2022

It’s simple – no free video compression tool or competitor can compare to the visual or audio quality of Enhanced Video Texting with RumbleUp. Here are the highlights of what EVT can do:

  1. EVT allows you to send clear 30 second videos to all phone types and phone carriers.
  2. Videos are embedded directly in the text message, not linked.
  3. Custom Captions are added to make videos accessible to phones on silent mode.
  4. The majority of Americans prefer to watch a video than read about the same topic.
  5. You don’t need to have professionally produced content to send compelling videos that will capture your audience’s attention! Videos ranging from direct-to-camera asks filmed on your phone to TV quality can all be sent via EVT.

Campaigns in 2021 used Enhanced Video Texting for a wide variety of initiatives, including fundraising, advocacy, persuasion, and as an alternative to expensive TV ads.

In 2022, these same campaigns will stay ahead of the game by sending attention-grabbing content directly to the audiences they want to reach.

3 Successful Examples of Fundraising with Texting

Raising money through instant two-way text programs is easier than most fundraisers realize. Use these proven success stories as a guide and start fundraising with texting to hit your donor targets every time.

We know what makes an effective fundraising message, as well as what tools and strategies work best to increase your chances for success.

Here are three standout examples of successful fundraising with texting for inspiration.

1) New York Governor Race – SMS Fundraising

While multimedia messages (MMS) are generally more effective than plain SMS messages, this first campaign proved that simple no-frill texts can be just as effective if the message copy is strong and directly relevant to the audience receiving it. This fundraising message (shown below) focused on the mandates in New York that caused thousands of people to be fired.

A real conversation with a voter

A key strategy they used for successful fundraising with texting was sending their messages to a small, targeted list of likely supporters instead of casting an overly large net across New York residents. This not only saved the campaign money, but also their valuable time that could be spent focusing on personal conversations with engaged supporters instead of sifting through hundreds of unsupportive responses.

A key feature they used was our URL shortener with Individualized Link Tracking to see exactly which of their contacts interacted with the message, even if they did not respond to it. This increased their accuracy of identifying solid supporters and likely donors with the first-party data sent directly to the campaign by the voters themselves. The URL in this message received 250 clicks out of 3,192 messages delivered, which can be segmented into a unique list and used for future re-targeting.

On this message alone, the campaign raised $1,431 and only spent $264 to send it out – making their ROI $5.42 for every $1 spent.

2) Texas State Representative Race – Leveraging Key Features

This Republican candidate was running against an incumbent in a district containing a particularly large, deep blue county. Their team was able to compile a list of around 5,000 residents in the area who had been identified as supporting the opposition effort to defund the district’s police force and sent them a targeted message directly addressing this topic.

Similar to the first example, this small targeted send proved to be effective in saving both time and money. Their team also used our URL shortener with Individualized Link Tracking and identified 555 people who clicked the URL out of 5,082 messages delivered, which the campaign can segment into a unique list and use for future re-targeting.

This campaign took their program a step further by including an image. Since a picture is worth a thousand words, including an image or video along with a text significantly increases the chances your audience will connect with the message and understand it more clearly. It is also a chance to show off your candidate with valuable face recognition and include valuable information that may not fit within the 320 character limit.

They also took full advantage of our Tap-then-Send responses with corresponding tags. The team used this tool to tag voters as they shared information about themselves in responses which were then added to update their contact card information. This team did an excellent job staying on top of their responses, equipping them with the ability to filter by these tags for easy segmenting and responding, which they took advantage of later.

Promptly responding to people who showed interest in donating has a profound impact, and is something this team diligently executed. People want to know their donations and sentiments of support are appreciated, so taking the time to reply to someone who responds to you, even if they’re unable to donate, is a surefire way to turn supporters into super supporters who will donate to you again.

Despite the difficulties that came with being a challenger in a tough district, this campaign raised over $1,500 on this single fundraising text (shown above) and spent only $582.45 – making their ROI $2.58 for every $1 spent.

3) National Activism Organization – Clever Language Use

This activist group sent a targeted end-of-year fundraising text message concisely stating what their mission is and that they needed donations.

Their message (shown above) illustrates the power of thoughtful message construction. They hit the mark on several key best practices when fundraising with texting that have been proven to boost performance:

  • Clear opt-out language is a key factor in improving the delivery rate of your message, and makes recipients feel that they are in control if they do not wish to be contacted.
  • Avoid excessive all caps and exclamatory punctuation to avoid striking the wrong tone.
  • The message is written in a conversational way, instead of a formal way resembling an email. Conversational messages resonate better with people.
  • They clearly stated what their donations would go towards and even provided an example dollar amount to contribute.
  • Their clever connection of the project name to the suggested contribution amount is a great way to get people’s attention.

This organization spent just under $600 to send its message to 4,068 people. These small targeted sends produce big results – in 2019, this organization pulled in over $4.4 million in revenue.

Bottom Line

We hope you find these examples useful in crafting your own effective messages for successful fundraising with texting at any stage in the election cycle.

How Advocacy Texting Led to Victory for a Small School Board Recall Race

Communication was key in this group’s efforts to gain signatures for their petition, and peer-to-peer (P2P) advocacy texting helped them achieve success.

The effects of the COVID pandemic permeated through all aspects of society, disrupting the lives of virtually everyone in the U.S. and around the world. One of the groups most affected by the pandemic were students, particularly those in K-12 grade levels.

The long term damage that shutdowns have had on developing children should not be underestimated. The lack of in person learning, discipline, proper resources and learning accommodations have already shown to be causing learning and social developmental issues in children in these K-12 age groups – and parents are noticing.

However, the decline of performance in schooling is not necessarily new or strictly caused by the pandemic. The increase in the importance of social media to developing students, the increased difficulty of school curriculum, and the emphasis on pursuing higher education have all contributed to an increase in mental health issues in students and has led to a startling decline in school performance for many years. Data pulled from The Nation’s Report Card reflects this fact.

Unsurprisingly, many parents across the nation have banded together to do something about the growing mental health and learning crises. What is surprising, however, are many School Boards’ lack of response toward these concerned parents.

Advocacy Texting for Concerned Parents

Our client worked with a group of parents who were facing these exact issues. This group worked tirelessly for 17 months to move their local Board of Education to address their concerns about the decline of their children’s school performance, but had been completely ignored. After doing research, it was found that many internal policies enacted by the Board of Education gave too much power to the wrong people while simultaneously decreasing their accountability, which is the root cause of this borderline negligent stagnation.

Seeing as the individuals the parents elected into these Board of Education positions no longer represented them and their best interests, they decided to initiate a recall election.

Recall elections are initiated when a sufficient number of voters sign a petition; in this case, the parents needed approximately 4,200 signatures per school board member. Our client knew that the best way to inform the community of this issue and instruct them on how to sign the petition was with peer-to-peer (P2P) texting.

What separates P2P texting from other professional communication channels like email is the fact that texting has the highest visibility (with 95%+ open rates!) while also providing the ability to have one-to-one, personalized conversations.

How to Achieve Success with Advocacy Texting

While there are many best practices that played a role in the above-average performance of this client’s texting programs, the key to their great success came down to utilizing the main feature of P2P texting: back-and-forth communication.

The team sent two main messages; one message letting people know when and where people needed to go to sign the petition, and a follow up message to those who didn’t respond to their first message urging people to take action before the upcoming deadline.

“It was helpful to clearly blast out a final message and details for how to sign. It drove people to the signing location and made it easy to ask supporters to find more people to sign in the final days.”

Real Text Message Example For P2P Advocacy Texting
A real text conversation with a supporter

When a supporter responded positively to a message our client’s team sent, they sent both automated and personalized messages thanking them for the support and guiding them to take further action. Responding is easy to do, but is often overlooked as many people only focus on the outbound messages they send. This in turn causes them to miss out on achieving genuine connection that turns supporters into super supporters!

You may be wondering how the team was able to successfully respond to thousands of people to move them to action. It’s simple – they kept track of conversations using the tagging feature available on our platform. Tagging is a powerful tool that can be used to keep track of the types of responses you get and plan follow-ups based on the information shared in conversations.

This team used tagging to make sure they stopped texting the people who responded that they had already signed the petition at the in person recall signing station! Pestering your supporters with unnecessary follow up texts makes it seem like you are using blast-messaging platforms and don’t care about actual engagement with them.

Real Text Message Example For P2P Advocacy Texting
A real text conversation with a supporter

This text sent by the team came after the contact was tagged as unresponsive after receiving the organization’s first text. When the contact responded with a question, the team responded with a personalized message answering the question and encouraging the person to spread the word about the cause.

This contact received that same second text after they were also tagged as unresponsive. This contact responded that they personally signed the petition, but not that most other people they knew had signed as well like the previous contact did. So, the team did a round of follow up using automated tap-then-send responses to select tagged contacts like this one asking them to ask more people to sign.

The results speak for themselves – by taking the time to respond, they were able to turn 4 signatures from this supporter into 14+ signatures! In addition, the inclusion of an MMS improved our client’s delivery rate from 93% in the first message project to 100% in the second message project.

Thanks to our client’s efforts to chase every signature, they exceeded their goals. They sent approximately 16,000 text messages and got about 4,500 signatures per Board of Education member, qualifying the recall to move to the election stage!

Bottom Line:

No matter the size of your organization or the difficulty of your goal, P2P texting is the best way to get your message in front of supporters and move them to action. This local organization was able to blow their goal out of the water with P2P advocacy texting, and so can you!

3 Reasons Advancing Advocacy Projects with P2P Texting Leads to Real Results

Your advocacy projects can make a real difference if you use the right tools, so start using P2P texting to advance your outreach strategy today

Advocacy has an important role to ensure that vulnerable people, ideas, and occupations are able to have their voices heard and their opinions genuinely considered in matters that directly affect them.

Common advocacy activities include media campaigns, public events, and collection of data for the purpose of publishing research. While there are many channels available to help implement these initiatives, none are as effective as peer-to-peer (P2P) texting.

Whether it’s crowdsourcing, gathering petition signatures, survey completions, event invites & RSVPs, volunteer recruitment, or any other objective, P2P texting is the most effective way to reach people and get them involved in your organization’s unique outreach goals.

Here are just some of the ways that P2P texting can establish, supplement, or complement your advocacy project’s outreach strategy:

P2P Texting is the Most Effective Channel for Community Outreach - Advocacy Projects

1) P2P Texting is the Most Effective Channel for Community Outreach

P2P texting was made for achieving genuine communication at scale – no other communication channel has the reach that P2P texting can achieve. In addition, P2P texting has proven itself to be the communication channel with the highest visibility and response rate, simply because it’s the channel people check most often.

We have seen that over 90% of texts are read within the first 3 minutes, and the average total open rate of messages is 95%. This means that even if someone chooses not to engage with your message, they are at least guaranteed to have seen the message, thereby increasing the awareness of your cause.

The average response rate for P2P texts ranges from 10-20%, which significantly outperforms traditional channels. The response rate from P2P texting is almost 10x higher engagement than email and 20x higher engagement than direct mail. TV ads are a historically popular option for both visibility and engagement, but the competition on popular channels and the high cost of a slot leaves TV ads out of the question for many advocacy organizations.

Supporter Engagement & Mobilization is Easy with P2P Texting Tools - Advocacy Project

2) Supporter Engagement & Mobilization is Easy with P2P Texting Tools

Giving supporters the ability to express their concerns and providing them access to relevant information and services is both a major goal of advocacy projects and an influential factor in the success of any cause. Just as your organization is committed to the cause important to you and your audience, our team is committed to providing you with the best tools and features to make your voice heard using the power of P2P texting.

An excellent way to explain the mission for your cause is by utilizing our award-winning Enhanced Video Texting functionality, which allows you to send full 30-60+ second TV-quality videos directly to your audience’s phones. This has proven to be a powerful tool for engagement. Messages that include a video see an average of 50% more responses than a plain SMS text. With statistics showing that approximately 1-in-5 people do not have paid TV service anymore, using more viable alternatives like P2P texting to get your videos seen and heard is essential.

If you are asking people to call into a number and advocate for your cause, use our call tracking tool to gather data on patch-through calling advocacy projects. This feature shows which of your contacts called the number you sent them, and the amount of time their phone call lasted. This allows you to easily count up how many successful calls were made, and also identify who your super-supporters are based on the call duration time. These are the people you should follow up with to get more involved with your cause or send a thank you message to let them know their action is appreciated.

Sending safe links for anything from petitions, surveys, event invitations, resource pages and more is possible with our custom URL shortener. Domains are regularly monitored and rotated to make sure that all messages containing links make it through carrier spam filters successfully and delivered to your audience’s phones. You can even track who is interacting with your links via our individualized text link tracking, something only previously possible with email.

A real example of tagging in our portal

Once you’ve engaged your audience with an initial text, you can send replies back to inquiries or thank you messages by using our customizable tagging tool and dynamic fields to pull in any uploaded custom data.

Tagging is easy to set up and simple for volunteers to apply to responses. These provide the ability to keep track of responses and make sure no one is left unresponded to. It also helps organize the types of responses received and aids volunteers with follow up messages.

Improving contact lists for targeted outreach is simple using our data segmentation feature. Setting up effective tags for your advocacy project’s needs will allow you to quickly filter through message conversations to identify contacts that behave similarly that can be targeted in a similar way, allowing your organization to have reliable data to increase engagement.

For example, people who responded positively showing interest for your cause and can be segmented into a new list to receive further information/messages, or people who RSVP’d for an event can be segmented into a special list to receive reminders regarding the event. When the right people are messaged at the right time, it is easier to build a solid support base of people who are passionate about your cause and willing to mobilize for it.
